Description
The Diavolo via ferrata has a difficulty rating of K2-3 and is therefore ideal also for beginners. From Andermatt train station, the approach through the Schöllenen Gorge is reachable on foot in about 20 minutes. 700 meters of steel cable, 265 iron pins and hooks, artificial steps and two ladders await climbers. The start is steep and quite exposed over a distinctive ridge in terraced terrain. Following this are alternating slabby rocks and grassy ledges. The spectacular views down the Schöllenen Gorge with the Devil's Bridge are breathtaking.
A longer unsecured left traverse (guidebook) leads to the finale of the route: a gully, an exposed rocky corner, and finally a vertical ladder, then you stand at the edge of the Tüfelstalboden (approx. 1860 m above sea level). Just a little higher is a nice rest area under the Uri flag with views of the granite peaks of the Salbitschijen.
Return to Andermatt is possible on the hiking trails Chilchenberg or Nätschen or with the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway.
