Climate and environmental protection
Andermatt Responsible
Andermatt Responsible is the campaign for climate-friendly and sustainable tourism in the Andermatt region. Our goal is to enable a resource-efficient tourism operation, as we believe it is in everyone’s interest to protect the Swiss mountain environment.
Renewable energy
All electricity supplied by EW Ursern and Energia Alpina comes entirely from renewable sources. The companies operate hydropower plants and wind turbines in the region.
Reduced energy consumption
In collaboration with the Act Cleantech Agency Switzerland, the company has implemented measures to lower energy use and CO₂ emissions. Since 2015, all participating sites have exceeded the targets set in the Act agreements every single year
Smart snowmaking
A large part of our snowmaking facilities was installed during the expansion of the ski area and meets today’s standards in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in technical snowmaking. Older systems are continuously being replaced, and new equipment is integrated into the existing snowmaking management system. With the introduction of the SnowSat system for measuring snow depth, we can offer guests perfectly groomed slopes while also protecting the environment by producing only as much artificial snow as is effectively needed.
Green snow groomer
In the 2020/21 winter season, Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG put its first hybrid snow groomer into operation. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent compared with a conventional diesel vehicle, and particulate emissions by as much as 99 percent. In the coming years, the company will continue to modernise its fleet with these innovative and efficient models.
Minimal helicopter use
Avalanches are mostly triggered from the ground, and helicopters are used only when absolutely necessary. Most rescue operations are carried out using a rescue sled. Whether a helicopter is deployed depends on the severity of the injury and the distance to be covered. Only around 20 to 25 percent of injured persons are transported to hospital by helicopter.
Public transport
Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG actively promotes travel by public transport. In collaboration with several coach companies, guests from major Swiss cities can reach the ski area conveniently with the Ski Express. In addition, Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG, together with the SOB Treno Gottardo and RailAway – the SBB’s leisure travel division – offers attractive combined tickets that include both travel to Andermatt and a ski pass.
Glacier cover
For more than two decades, the Gurschen Glacier has been covered with snow and a white protective fleece each spring. This helps slow down the melting of the glacier ice during the summer months.
Clean-up Days
Together with various partner organisations and volunteers from across Switzerland, Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG organises a Clean‑up Day to collect litter left behind in the ski area during the winter season.
Society
Fair working conditions
Employees of Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG receive fair wages, market‑based and modern employment conditions, and social security benefits. At SkiArena Andermatt‑Sedrun, all people are treated equally.
Employee development
Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG offers flexible working models that help employees balance their professional and personal lives. Training and further education are actively supported.
Local roots
All maintenance work that the Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG team cannot carry out itself is assigned to local companies whenever possible. This helps keep travel distances short and ensures that value creation remains within the region. As a matter of principle, local businesses are always preferred.
Economy
Jobs and training positions
Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG employs around 70 staff members in summer and roughly 200 in winter. Each year, the company offers an apprenticeship position for ropeway mechatronics technicians, and currently four apprentices are in training. In doing so, SkiArena ensures a steady pipeline of qualified professionals and contributes to maintaining Switzerland’s mountain railway industry.
Regional value creation
By creating and maintaining jobs and working closely with local partners, service providers, and suppliers, Andermatt‑Sedrun Sport AG makes a sustainable contribution to value creation in the region.
