Description
From the former mule-drawn village of Hospental with its historic tower, the route leads up to the Gotthard Pass (2091 m above sea level). The Gotthard Pass road up from Hospental leads past lush green meadows and steep rock faces. You will discover a variety of plants and animals. Shortly before reaching the top of the pass, you pass small mountain lakes that invite you to linger. Once you reach the Gotthard Pass, you are rewarded with a fantastic view and refreshment stops. Not only do different cultures and language regions come together at the top of the pass, but the language also changes from German to Italian, and the villages and culinary offerings exude Italianità. At the Gotthard Hospiz at the top of the pass, racing cyclists turn off onto the historic pass road, the famous Tremola. The spectacular serpentines down to Airolo are considered the longest architectural monument in Switzerland.
