Trekking Lucomagno - Passo del sole - Altanca

This route does not belong to the signposted snowshoe trail network. We are in open terrain where we have to assess the dangers ourselves.

We start early! From the parking lot in Casaccia, we follow many tracks southward and cross the Brenno on a wooden bridge. Through a larch forest, dotted with very gnarled and old specimens, we climb up to the alpine pastures Stabbio Nuovo and Lareccio. We walk past the alpine huts into the Rondadoira valley, which soon becomes more open and wider, and we can soon see the Passo del sole. Once at the top, the Val Piora lies at our feet on the other side and we have a good overview of the second part of our route.

The route mostly goes downhill, sometimes gently, sometimes steeper, with some small ascents in between. Quite a way before the Ritom Lake, we head for the Pian Giübin ridge, to the left of the lake. Then follows a short descent to Fontanella, after which we follow the summer path to the small pass crossing Costone. Occasionally, we find hiking trail markers. Through the small and picturesque Pinett valley we reach the dam. Depending on the snow conditions, we follow the summer trail down to Altanca.

Last return option: from Altanca by post bus at 4:15 pm / from Ambri by train at 4:49 pm
