A historic location

Today's hotel stands on a site steeped in history. In the 19th century, the construction of the Gotthard Pass road (1830) turned Andermatt into a popular destination for wealthy guests from all over Europe. It was during this period that the Grandhotel Bellevue, one of the first luxury hotels in the Ursern Valley, was built. Aristocratic guests, including members of the Russian high nobility, stopped here on their journey over the Gotthard.

With the opening of the Gotthard railway tunnel in 1882, travel routes changed and the hotel's importance slowly declined. After various uses, the building was finally demolished in 1986.

A new beginning for Andermatt

In 2005, Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris recognised Andermatt's potential as a tourist destination. His development project envisaged a comprehensive modernisation of the destination, including new hotels, holiday apartments and an expansion of the ski area.

The Chedi Andermatt was finally built on the historic site of the former Grand Hotel Bellevue. After four years of construction, it opened on 6 December 2013 and is now one of the leading luxury hotels in the Alps.
