Albin Brun, the jazz and world musician becomes honorary lighthouse keeper 2026
Today, Albin Brun is considered a key figure in the scene between jazz and contemporary folk music in Switzerland. The multi-instrumentalist plays saxophone, Schwyzerörgeli, duduk, flute and other instruments in a wide variety of formations. With his very different formations, he maintains an intensive concert schedule and his tours have taken him to over 25 countries. Albin Brun is celebrating his 50th anniversary on stage this calendar year. Albin Brun was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne in 2013 and the Swiss Music Prize in 2017, among others.
Albin Brun loves the Swiss mountains and is often out and about in the mountains. This may well have been another reason for the Rheinquelle Lighthouse Foundation to appoint Albin Brun as honorary lighthouse keeper.
Inauguration in a trio
The ceremony for the investiture of Albin Brun into his honorary office will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026. At 3 p.m., after a laudatory speech, he will be presented with the insignia of his office, the large red lighthouse key. Afterwards, the guests in attendance will enjoy a concert. Together with the two musicians Claudio Strebel (double bass) and Markus Lauterburg (drums/percussion), the trio will perform in, on and in front of the Rheinquelle lighthouse.
Since 2016, the Rheinquelle Lighthouse Foundation has appointed exceptional personalities from the Rhine catchment area as honorary lighthouse keepers every year. Albin Brun's predecessors include the Dutch variety duo "Mini & Maxi" (2016), the Dutch-Swiss artist Ted Scapa (2017) and the water ambassador and expedition swimmer Ernst Bromeis (2018), TV personality Nik Hartmann (2019), Swiss dialect singer Sina (2020), reggae singer and music producer Dodo (2022/23), National Councillor Martin Candinas (2023/24) and Lucerne artist Ursula Stalder (2024/25).
As a shining landmark, the world's highest lighthouse, Rheinquelle, symbolically marks the beginning of the Rhine and, as an active ambassador for the Surselva and Andermatt/Urserntal regions, is intended to reach and touch as many people as possible along the Rhine. It is a replica of the lighthouse that served for many years at the mouth of the Rhine in Hoek van Holland in the Netherlands and is now in the Maritime Museum in Rotterdam.
Lifelong access to the tower
The non-profit foundation Leuchtturm Rheinquelle aims to promote tourism and the staging of the Rhine spring for the benefit of the region by organizing artistic activities and events. Donations of CHF 100 or more are rewarded with an exclusive lighthouse key box with picture brochure and key. The "Red Lighthouse Key" allows access to the lighthouse on the Oberalp Pass at any time (limited access in winter). (www.leuchtturm-rheinquelle.ch)
